Welcome to one of the oceanʼs most enchanting and vibrant ecosystems — Southern Californiaʼs kelp forests. Not only are kelp forests a unique and visually stunning natural environment, they are also critical in sustaining marine life by providing refuge, food, and shelter for a variety of marine species, some of which are featured here. As you view this exhibit, take a journey beneath the waves to explore the hidden wonders of these towering underwater canopies found off our coast.

This scientifically detailed exhibit is a result of an interdisciplinary collaboration in 2022 between the departments of Biology and Fine Arts to inspire the San Diego Mesa community to learn more about the biodiversity of our local kelp forests. This exhibit showcases several marine specimens from the Biology Departmentʼs teaching collections, as well as realistic, hand-crafted replicas of kelp forest animals. These marine organisms, from the colorful sponges to the magnificent giant kelp, highlight the beauty and productivity of Southern California kelp forest ecosystems. Each of the hundreds of species found there has its own unique natural history and specific ecological role to play in its habitat. In addition, kelp forests provide a number of valuable ecosystem services to society:

They serve as habitats for numerous commercially-important species of fish.
They absorb energy from waves and buffer the force of storms, which reduces the impact of coastal erosion on the shoreline.
They absorb coastal nutrients that would otherwise pollute nearshore waters.
They play a significant role in capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequestering it into their tissues, thus healthy kelp forests are critical to help combat climate change.

Even if you never get to experience the majesty of a kelp forest firsthand by SCUBA diving or snorkeling, you now have a greater appreciation for the intricate web of life and biodiversity that exists offshore within our San Diego kelp forests.
